Well I am supposed to write a bit "about me" for this link so here is the short version as it relates to my art... Born and raised on the Caribbean island of Barbados, I literally woke up one morning sometime in 2001 and had this very clear thought that I wanted to draw, and wanted to draw portraits. Why not I thought, after all, my university degree is in Biology and after many years spent in Journalism, Marketing and Retail Store Design, what was one more indulgence? Besides, I still didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up!
So armed with that decision, I purchased a few books (the 'bible' in my opinion being "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards) and proceeded to teach myself. After all, who remembers what they learnt in school all those years ago? Besides, I was much better at craft than art in those days. After a few years of black & white sketches I wanted to add some colour and tentatively started playing with pastels. Well, after that, I didn't want to go back to B&W and wanted something more vibrant than pastels. Next step, oil paints, but at the time I had no idea what to do and didn't have the time or opportunity. A move in 2005 halfway around the world to New Zealand with my husband, has afforded me the opportunity to explore that desire. I found an art class/group with a local artist in the area where I live and have finally found what I want to do when I grow up...PAINT (for now anyways)!
It's a continual learning experience so it's never boring. I do want to start painting some scenes of my native Barbados (as we Bajans in the immortal words of Gabby like to say... "my navel string bury right there") and eventually create a For Sale section on this page where these paintings can be purchased, but currently commissions for portraits are keeping me busy.
Thanks for visiting and I hope that as time progresses the paintings will get better and better.
